Annual Report of the Sata Foundation for the Year 2023

I. Support for Other Foundations

(1) Aid for War Victims in Ukraine

The Sata Foundation made another donation to Medair for the Ukraine Emergency Response (https://www.medair.org) to provide life-saving emergency aid for Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons after the Russian-Ukrainian war started in February 2022. This was a continuation of the Sata Foundation’s donation to Medair in 2022.

(2) Donation to the victims of the Hamas/Palestine-Israel war

The Sata Foundation made a donation to Alliance for Middle East Peace (ALLMEP – https://www.allmep.org/), a humanitarian NGO that is the largest and fastest growing network of Palestinian and Israeli peacebuilders highly recommended by the Time magazine for its neutrality and good work. The donation was intended to lessen the humanitarian crises after the war between Hamas/Palestine and Israel started on 7 October 2023.

II. The Madonna of Nagasaki and World Peace

Run for Peace Rally 2023

Since 2005, the Sata Foundation has sponsored the “Run for Peace” Cycling Rally in France to commemorate the anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (on 6 and 9 August 1945, respectively) and to promote public awareness of the human sufferings caused by the use of nuclear weapons as well as the need to ensure that scientific knowledge is used for human health and well-being, and not as weapons of destruction.
There were 362 registered cyclists for the Rally on 29 July 2023 for the 4 different tracks. The event raised funds to be used for the Sata Foundation’s charitable activities.

III. Upholding World Peace

With a view to enhancing the “understanding among peoples of all cultures, religions and beliefs of the value of peace and respect for universally recognized human rights”, which is part of the Sata Foundation's Mission Statement, the annual Sata Foundation Oxford International Court of Justice (ICJ) Fellowship Award of £3,000 (equal to CHF 3,407) has been set up since March 2023 to support the living expenses in The Hague, Netherlands, of the candidate from Oxford chosen by the International Court of Justice to be interned there for one year.

Ms. Lara Ibrahim has been selected as the first recipient of the Oxford ICJ Fellowship Award with the support of the Sata Foundation. Lara is studying for her Doctorate in Law at Oxford University, researching the extraterritorial human rights obligations of nation States in the context of climate change. She completed the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL), a master in law degree, at Oxford University in 2022 with Distinction for her performance in the following subjects: International Human Rights Law: Theory, Practice and Critique; International Environmental Law; International Law of the Sea; and Comparative Human Rights. She completed her Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree at the University of Sheffield, where she also received the Vaughan Bevan Memorial Prize for obtaining the best degree result in her cohort.

This was very interesting choice. Lara is a British-born Muslim. She has received a full scholarship given to Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds who are ordinarily resident in the UK and who have been under-represented in Oxford University’s doctoral programmes in recent years.
